Issue with GitHub Copilot Free Monthly Limit Reset Date

I subscribed to the GitHub Copilot Free Plan on December 18, 2024, and fully utilized the code completion limit for the month. Afterward, I disabled the Copilot plugin to avoid using the service until my limit reset. I did this until January 20, 2025, when I expected my monthly limit to reset and for me to be able to continue using Copilot.

However, upon re-enabling the plugin on January 20, 2025, I received the following message:

"You've reached your monthly code completion limit. Upgrade your plan to Copilot Pro (30-day Free Trial) or wait until 2025-02-19 for your limit to reset to continue coding with GitHub Copilot."

This is unexpected, as I did not use any part of the service. The message suggests that my limit reset will only happen on February 19, 2025, which seems to indicate an error in the system’s calculation of my reset date.

Expected Behavior:

The monthly limit should reset on January 19, 2025, based on my subscription start date, especially considering I did not use any code completions during the new month quota of January prior to the reset.

Actual Behavior:

The system is incorrectly calculating the reset date as February 19, 2025, and showing the message that I have reached my monthly limit.

Additional Notes:

• I made sure to disable the plugin entirely during the period after reaching the limit to ensure I wasn't consuming any code completions.
• The issue seems to be related to a miscalculation of the monthly limit reset period, as no usage occurred during the gap, and my reset should have happened on January 19, 2025.

Could you please check why this discrepancy is happening and adjust my limit reset date accordingly?

I hope you will work on resolving the issue so that it does not appear to users.

i downloaded the Copilot app on my mac. Pasted the code there, asked the same questions. It told me exactly what to change and everything's working fine. You have to do the corrections manually though.

@HyperShark1007 - Are you saying you fixed your quota not resetting after 30 days by doing this? What code did you paste? I asked the online github copilot about this issue, and it told me I must be wrong because the quotas only reset on the 1st of the month - less than useless: just gaslighting me.

I don't think they're talking about that as there's a an app for copilot like how chatgpt or gemini has to for manually pasting the code and getting responses there rather than having the inline suggestions and the chat in the ide

@octo-badger It's a work around. I linkedin the copilot app to my Microsoft account and it's fine for me. Instead of waiting for them to fix the bug. Also ut doesn't seem to have a cap from my observations. If you have the edge browser use copilot from there. Paste your code. Check for issues and it will tell you what to fix

Having the same issue. For the last couple of days it said that the limit will reset on Jan-18, now it's Jan-20 and it says I need to wait till Feb-18!

This is a known bug affecting many Copilot free tier users since October 2025. The reset date keeps pushing forward by one month instead of actually resetting your quota. Many users reported the same pattern

Try these methods : -

• Multiple accounts trick: Make 2-3 GitHub accounts and switch between them for fresh credits (the workaround you mentioned works)
• Student benefits: If you're a student, grab the GitHub Student pack - way better limits

Having the exact same issue. Reached the limit and was supposed to be reset on January 17th. On the 17th., it jumped to February 17th.

Still if I make 1 github account per month, soon I will have several to manage (now requiring also AF2 configuration).
And if I really want to be lazy, I could just create X+ accounts and use them until the credits are over, then delete them and restart again. No need for paid tier. But I am guessing this is not the logic of GitHub!
My student years are long behind me (at the time there was not copilot)...

I would recommend that you use other code editors. I personally use Cursor, Kiro, and Windsurf. You can choose a specific model you like. Kiro is currently giving away a lot of credit, which may help you :)

Looks like it was fixed for a while, but the last month and a half or more it's happening again - the difference is they're completely ignoring it this time: totally unresponsive and their bot is auto-closing every issue raised.
Looks like loads of PRO users are getting the same / similar treatment.

I am also facing the same issue, despite my Github Account verfies my active student status and Github student benefits, I am getting limit exceeded error for Copilot in Vscode. I have tried reinstalling and relogging in to Copliot extention, but facing the same issue.

Edit: The issue got solved, after re-verifying for my Github Student benefits, I did not reapply to Github Copilot which was required to be applied separately, after doing that the issue got resolved.

I have been waiting until today for my limit to reset, because it previously said Feb 4, but now it's saying I've reach the limit until March 4, and I did not use any of my credits today. And I just realized it did the same thing last month. I've been waiting months for this to start working again but it keeps claiming I've used the limit when I never even had the chance to use it. It's like it keeps getting pushed back a month.

Hello, you are promoting GitHub Copilot as if it were free, but it’s not. The free usage runs out too quickly and you’re forced to pay. It’s not open source. At the very least, you should allow the use of other free models. But please don’t advertise it as free when in reality the free usage is quickly exhausted and users are forced to wait another month or pay. Please don’t ruin VS Code, which used to be a great development platform.
If this is a mistake, please clarify it publicly. Otherwise, you must clearly state that GitHub Copilot is not free. Emphasizing that it is free when the usage is extremely limited and quickly exhausted is misleading. Users deserve transparency, not deceptive marketing. If the service requires payment after minimal use, this must be explicitly communicated — no ambiguity, no hidden terms.

Hi @Akash1134 - it's been a month and a half and more people are getting affected by this daily.
Any update? The silence and the fact the bot just instantly closes any issues raised makes it feel like we're talking to a brick wall.

Personally I'm looking into other options - MS shooting themselves in the foot with this.

I have this issue. I first used the service at the start of Jan and used up my completions in a couple of days. It said wait until 31st of Jan for it to reset. I just realised that it never was, it still says it has been used, and now tells me to wait until 31st of March. That is 3 months of waiting for a reset.

Same issue, usage stayed at 100% through the March 14th reset date. (And no, @clouqs, paying for the Pro service is not an acceptable solution to the free version not delivering what it advertises. Apart from anything else, this doesn't give me any confidence that Github would correctly count and reset the allowance even if I was paying.)

I am experiencing the same situation from Visual Studio (Not VS Code)
It was supposed to reset 2 days ago, but today I tried using Copilot, and found out that the reset date was pushed by month.
When I opened my github account settings I've found that my chat usage is at 100% despite me not using it for more than 30 days now. Code completion at 15%, but I can't be sure I didn't use code completion a few times, since I opened visual studio once few days ago and write some code, and IDE suggests some completion, especially for comments, no matter if I want it or not.

If you check the meta bot here it is autoclosing reports of anyone mentioning they have free limit reset issues and directing users to the wrong issue. As mentioned by @octo-badger

The bot has autoclosed over 1000 issues and has directed several hundred reports of 'free limit did not reset' to the wrong issue. This suggests the extent of the problem is not fully being logged.

GitHub Copilot is total crap, don't even consider it exists. I'm waiting for almost two weeks now, the next reset date is getting closer than the last missed one. Bots getting out of control, nobody there to control them anymore. It just fits into the picture. That stupid AI can't handle bug reports, it can't even count and compare simple numbers – how should it even code? I won't be throwing money at them if the essential experience is already that bad. I might consider a Claude subscription, but their free service is down most of the time, probably because of the lack of resources. I couldn't test that for complex requirements yet because I didn't get results back. All in all, that AI thing is eating up the world's resources and we're not getting out an appropriate amount of value from that. Think I'll be coding myself again, then I know what I get and fully understand it, even if I have to think about it a few days longer, it's so worth it.

Still this bug is not resolved. My free subscription it was supposed to be reset yesterday - March 21st, 2026 -, and today the message is that the account will be reset on April 21st without using it... The same happened last month, when on February 21st should be reset too...
